There are actually two different forms of antique porcelain dolls, bisque and china. Depending on the time the doll was made and the glazing process will determine which you are dealing with. Most likely these dolls were first created in Germany, France and Denmark in the early 1800’s, but it wasn’t until later in this century that these dolls grew in popularity and started to be mass produced.

The majority of antique porcelain dolls were created by a very small amount of companies and each company was known for the specific designs that they made. The French were known for their more fashionable outfits that matched the clothing of the upper class women of the time. Later the German dolls gained in popularity because they were less expensive and easier to come by.

No matter what type of porcelain doll you are looking for there are some things to check. Check the skin of the doll for coloring and damage. If there is cracking or crazing on the face this can lower the value. Often if the skin is yellowed or off color it is because repairs were attempted on the doll, this also lowers the value. Original period clothing and wigs is what most collectors will prefer, but dolls with clothing that fit the time period or are also antique is acceptable. Keep in mind that many of the antique dolls will have had some sort of repair work done on them, but in many cases the repairs have lower the value more than the damages would have done.

Many of the antique porcelain dolls were given to children to play with and were not a collector’s item for adults. With this kept in mind it is no wonder that they are highly prized now as so few of them remain on original or mint conditions. No matter what your reasoning for collecting antique porcelain dolls they will keep you entranced with the style and grace.
