Beatrice Alexander Behrman, daughter of an Eastern European immigrant was the founder of Alexander doll company in 1923. Her father Maurice was also known to be America’s first doll hospital on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She began creating dolls based on prominent personalities like Queen Elizabeth II. Upon the release of Cissy, another first happened as this is the first doll to have an adult figure and to wear haute couture.
Alexander doll company also featured characters from Desperate Housewives, Wicked and a line of Cinderella dolls inspired by the American Ballet Theatre. Alexander doll company even has partnership with TV and movies such as Sex and the City and Hide and Seek. In 1995, Kaizen Breakthrough Partnership acquired the Alexander doll company.
The types of Alexander dolls are: Cloth Madame Alexander dolls, like Alice in Wonderland; Composition Madame Alexander dolls such as Tiny Betty, Little Betty, Wendy Ann, Princess Elizabeth, Jane Withers, Juanita Quigley, Dionne Quintuplets and Margaret O’Brien; and Hard-plastic Madame Alexander dolls namely Maggie, Margaret, Cissy, Lissy and Elise. In terms of ages, it is further classified as: Antique Madame Alexander dolls, those created before 1930s; Collectible Madame Alexander dolls, those that were finished more than 25 but less than 75 years ago; Modern Madame Alexander dolls, those completed within 25 years and Contemporary Madame Alexander dolls, those manufactured currently.
